Apalachicola Vacation Highlights

To appreciate the history of Apalachicola, stroll around the waterfront
and Victorian-era homes. Tin warehouses along Water St are reminders of
the town's seafaring days of the late 1800s, and the Sponge Exchange
dates from the 1840's.
The lovely Trinity Episcopal Church, built
in New York and shipped 1837, is a feature of the residential area.

Gorrie Museum State Park displays a replica of Doctor
Gorrie's cooling machine, a forerunner of the air conditioner that is
now an indispensible part of modern society. The
original was built for the purpose of cooling hospitalised patients
during the Florida summer.
The Estuarine Walk has aquariums
of fish, turtles and displays of various other estuarine life.
Apalachicola National Forest is located a few miles
northeast of the town and is a
treasure trove of outdoor pursuits for nature lovers, with canoeing,
camping, hiking and mountain bikong. St. Vincent's Wildlife
Refuge is a haven for bird watching.

 Explore the Fort Gadsden State
Historic Site, or view the lighthouse at Cape St. George. Nearby Carrabelle
and Dog Island provide scenic retreats.
Hiking and camping is
permitted on the 9 miles (14km) of beaches in St.
George Island State Park. This pristine nature preserve
occupies the eastern end of St. George Island. Nature cruises are
available to the barrier islands and on local waterways.
Afternoon or
sunset sailing on the bay is a popular way to spend a few hours. The
fishing in these waters is excellent and several charter boats are
available from the local dock.
