Looking for a romantic getaway
just an hour from Miami but with the feel of being in a whole new
world? That place is Key Largo, the laid back community that
welcomes you to the Florida Keys. Don't be fooled by what you
see from the road... there are hidden gems that deserve some of you
time to explore and enjoy.
Key Largo is supposed to
be home to hard drinking, grizzled fishermen and sand-between-the-toes
basic lodgings and it's undeserved reputation causes most travelers to
pass it pass by on their way to destinations further south down the
Keys. That's unfortunate because Key Largo is genuinely one of the best
kept secrets of the Florida Keys.
Key Largo is indelibly linked to the 1948 period film of the same
name, but the spectacular underwater
John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park
that is the main draw card that entices visitors to Key Largo. This
is a place to scuba dive, snorkel, swim with the wild dolphins or just enjoy this
underwater paradise from a glass bottom boat.
Key Largo has an eclectic mix of lodgings that range from modern ocean frontage
resorts to secluded Bed and Breakfasts that offer everything from air conditioned suites
to private sandy coves for watching the awesome Florida Keys sunsets. Some
lodgings provide fully equipped kitchens stocked for breakfasts, with jacuzzis
and the use of boats and bikes all included in the rates. Don't be surprised if
the property looks like a ramshackle hut from the outside... external
appearances don't count for a lot in Key Largo.
Being so close to the large population in Miami, quite a few of the proprietors
of b&b's specialize in Florida Keys styled packages for weddings, honeymoons and
anniversaries, with music, flowers, wedding cake, champagne and all the
trimmings.
In this part of the
world, you realize pretty quickly that the mileage markers are the key
to finding your destination which is likely to be hidden behind trees and down winding gravel roads
leading to the sea. Miss the Mile Markers on the highway and you’ll pass
hidden gems and never know they're there.
Dining in Key Largo
is usually a laid back, unpretentious experience but the quality and
range of seafood is of the highest quality. A stop over in Key largo
is justified just to have a fresh fish dish in one of the beachfront
restaurants. Some folk who profess to know what they are
talking about rate Kay Largo as having the best fresh fish restaurants on the East Coast.
Key Largo locals claim their
home is the diving capital of the World (the Great Barrier Reef and Vanuatu
might disagree) but the town is nearly as famous for being a
sport-fishing
destination. Some of the great charter captains and fishing guides work out of
Key Largo and can take you after trophy sailfish offshore, bonefish along the
Atlantic shallows and tarpon in Florida Bay.
