Caribbean-bound cruise ships depart from the man-made Port Canaveral which boasts one of the best passenger terminal complexes in the world. The south side of the port is lined with seafood restaurants and marinas, which serve as home base for off-shore floating casino ships and the area's deep-sea charter and group fishing boats. Port Canaveral offers three parks with one featuring oceanfront camping for RVs and tents.
Arrival by air is via Melbourne International Airport, 22 miles (35 km) south of Cocoa Beach. Flights are provided by Continental and Delta. Orlando International Airport is approximately 35 miles (57 km) to the west and has many more flight options with generally less expensive fares due to the competition. It's an easy 45-minute drive from the Orlando airport to the beaches via the Bee Line Expressway. The nearest Amtrak services are to the stations at DeLand and Okeechobee. A car is recommended in this area. There is a local bus service operated by Space Coast Area Transit but the routes tend to be time-consuming.
The soft sands of Cocoa Beach are a favorite destination for strolling, sunning and surfing. Begin your day with a round of golf and spend the afternoon fishing from the pier. Take an airboat, kayak or riverboat for an eco-tour of the ancient cypress forests and explore the vast selection of wildlife. Finish a perfect day with a peaceful evening watching the sun set on the Indian or Banana Rivers. Spend a day or two visiting the incredible Kennedy Space Center and Astronaut Hall of Fame. Expand you knowledge of space at the Brevard Planetarium And Observatory or one of many other space attractions. Stroll the tree-lined streets of Historic Cocoa Village and shop in the charming boutiques or one of the local malls. At Port Canaveral, fish for the ocean's finest seafood from the jetty or take an off-shore fishing charter. Check the bustling array of restaurants, laid back taverns, bars and the vibrant nightlife. Nearby Port Canaveral is home to the largest Las Vegas-style casino cruise ship in the world with twice daily sailings.
