Key Largo Florida
58 miles (93 km) south west of
Miami
The Florida Keys are the fishing and diving capital of
USA. It's the proximity of
Key Largo and the
Upper Keys to the Florida mainland that make it a favorite destination for
weekend getaways.
People seeking a break from the hustle and
stress of their week-day lives are attracted to the easy, laid back
lifestyle.
The Upper Keys extend from Key
Largo south to Long Key and the majority of visitors arrive via U.S.
Hwy 1. Key Largo was at
one time named Rock Harbor but with the success of the 1948 film Key
Largo the town fathers couldn't pass up a great opportunity and
renamed the town.
The town is more
developed than its neighbors to the south and caters to bigger numbers
of visitors.
Many of those visitors
are water enthusiasts coming to explore the renowned John Pennekamp
Coral Reef State Park, the nation's first underwater state park.
This marine sanctuary is home
to 40 species of coral and more than 650 species of fish. The
park covers 75 sq miles of of ocean containing living coral reefs and
has 170 acres of land with walking trails.
Islamorada, which
actually consists of four islands spanning about 20 miles (32 km), is
the self proclaimed sport fishing capital of the world. Several
big-purse fishing tournaments take place here.
Considered to be
the unofficial capital of the Upper Keys, the town offers excellent
dining opportunities and plenty of entertainment.
Key Largo and
Islamorada accommodation has something for everybody, with large
up market beach resorts, condominiums, hotels, inns, chain motels and
bed & breakfast lodgings.
