Lake City Florida
Lake City provides a good base for a North Central Florida
vacation as it offers a variety of attractions, services and
facilities in close proximity to some of the region's scenic
rivers and springs.
It is the commercial and administrative center of Columbia
County and its strategic location on intersecting major
routes is part of the reason the city is known as the
"Gateway to Florida." The town combines the appeal of small
community living with the conveniences of larger city life. Residents in the nearby areas, such as nearby Fort White,
enjoy Lake City's dining and shopping. White Springs is
located 14 miles (20km) north of Lake City and is named for the springs
located on the upper Suwannee River that are the result of water
bubbling up though sulfur deposits.
Visitors are attracted to
the town and surrounding areas for the scenic beauty of the waterways, outdoor activities and
historical events.
White Springs hosts the oldest state folk festival in America,
the Florida
Folk Festival.
Its tranquil rural setting, gentle streams
and bubbling springs is a perfect backdrop for outdoor and cultural
activities. The Suwannee River is a
popular setting for outdoor enthusiasts with lots of activities
available for visitors. Nearby Big
Shoals State Forest is the location of Florida's only whitewater
rafting (seasonal).
The Stephen
Foster State Folk Culture Center honors the memory of Stephen
Foster, composer of many early American folk songs such as
"The Old Folks At Home" and "Oh Susanna".
Classes at the centre demonstrate the creation of arts and crafts from
raw materials as traditional and contemporary crafts people practice
their art and give demonstrations. |
