Naples Vacations

106 miles west of Miami & 185 miles south of Tampa

Naples has a reputation as south west Florida's most sophisticated town, home to wealthy residents accustomed to the best life has to offer.  The boutique shops, art galleries and civic amenities hold their own against anything else in the United States.

Yet Naples remains free of elitism, it's relaxed friendliness welcoming everyone who is attracted by its magnificent beach. The town was founded in 1886, when a group of speculators bought 8,700 acres of ocean fronted land, subdivided it into building lots and built a pier and a hotel.

The sister of President Grover Cleveland was one of the first attracted to the area. She and other notables of the time built beach houses along the shoreline in the area now known as the historic district of Olde Naples.

For a town with a population of just over 20 000, Naples boasts an incredible 90 golf courses,  so it hardly surprising the town has earned the nickname "Golf Capital of America."  Some of the most exclusive private courses are available to guests and affiliated hotels and resorts.

Flanked by the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the magnificent Everglades, visitors can explore and experience these great natural resources, as well as the town's up market commercial centers, all in the same day.

To the north of Olde Naples is Vanderbilt Beach where much of Naples vacation accommodation is located. The mix of inns, hotels, high rise condominiums, beach resorts and vacation rentals give it a character in keeping with a traditional beach resort. It sits like an oasis of holiday development between the preserved areas of the Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park on the one side and up-market golf residential developments on the other.

Getting There & Getting Around

The majority of visitors to the region arrive at the Southwest Florida International Airport located in Fort MyersNaples Municipal Airport  is served by the commuter arms of American and United/US Airways.

The Naples Trolley runs between the Naples Trolley General Store, the Welcome Center and Vanderbilt Beach. The drivers provide narration for the tours.

Naples Vacation Highlights

The Naples beaches are amongst the best in Florida. The familiar beachfront vistas of hotels and condominiums does not happen here and the clean, white sand has been attracting locals and visitors for generations.  Windsurfers, wave runners, skim boards, snorkeling gear and hobie cats are all much in evidence, providing great fun and entertainment for visitors.

It almost goes without saying that there is golf, lots and lots of golf. The Naples area has some of the finest courses in the USA which offer a great break from the sun and sand of the beaches. Culture and the arts are very popular with over 100 art galleries plus the renowned Naples Museum of Art and Philharmonic Center for the Arts. The Naples Museum of Art was the first full-scale art museum in Southwest Florida. It features an impressive array of 15 different galleries that highlight paintings, sculptures and drawings.

Everyone gets to handle some of the animals and reptiles at Caribbean Gardens, the only zoo in Florida to have Indo-chinese tigers plus African big cats and frican hyenas. The zoo has boat rides, primate islands, flora displays plus kangaroos, alligators and pythons. The Gordon River and Naples Bay south to the Gulf are great for sightseeing cruises, dolphin-watching, and sunset cruises.

The locals like to fish from the Naples Pier, but always with an eye on the local pelicans. Volleyball players train and compete in Lowdermilk Park in front of Millionaires Row. There are 6 miles (9 km) of canoe and kayak trails in Clam Pass County Park, a miniature wilderness that is home to multitudes of Florida bird species, an occasional alligator and other Florida wildlife.

The Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park has been listed among America's top 10 beaches. Fish viewing is possible on a small reef in about 12 feet (3.5 m) of water and about 150 feet (45 m) offshore. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has raised boardwalk of just over 2 miles long that introduces visitors to this 11,000 acres of native swamp, forest and all of its unique inhabitants.
